Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
-
Laser hair removal can be a great option if you’re looking for a longer-term reduction in unwanted hair and less ongoing maintenance.
Everyone is different, which is why I start with a consultation. We’ll talk about your hair, skin, the areas you’d like to treat and what you’re hoping to achieve so I can assess whether laser hair removal is suitable for you and give you realistic expectations from the beginning.
-
Yes. If you’re new to The Beam Room Berkshire, a consultation and patch test are mandatory and must take place at least 48 hours before your first laser hair removal treatment. This requirement cannot be waived.
Your consultation is completely free of charge and gives us time to discuss your goals, go through the treatment process and answer any questions before you decide whether you’d like to go ahead.
-
Your first appointment is all about getting to know you, understanding what you want to achieve and making sure laser hair removal is right for you.
I’ll talk you through the process, ask you some relevant questions, assess the areas you’re interested in treating and carry out your patch test. It’s also your opportunity to ask me anything you’d like to know, so you can make an informed decision with no pressure.
-
A patch test allows me to assess how your skin responds to the laser before carrying out a full treatment.
It’s an important part of providing treatment safely and is why I require at least 48 hours between your patch test and first laser hair removal appointment.
-
No. Your consultation and patch test must be completed at least 48 hours before your first laser hair removal treatment.
-
Not at all. Your consultation is about giving you the information you need to decide whether laser hair removal is right for you.
There’s no pressure to commit to a course or purchase more than you need. I’ll give you honest, realistic advice and you can decide how you’d like to proceed.
Laser Hair Removal & Results
-
Laser hair removal can significantly reduce unwanted hair over a course of treatments. Everyone responds differently, so during your consultation I’ll explain what you can realistically expect based on your individual hair, skin and treatment area.
-
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy that is absorbed by the pigment within the hair. This energy is converted into heat, targeting the hair follicle and helping to reduce its ability to produce hair.
Because hairs are at different stages of their growth cycle at any one time, a course of treatments is needed to progressively target them.
-
I recommend an initial course of at least eight treatments, although everyone responds differently and some clients may require additional treatments.
Your hair characteristics, treatment area and individual response can all influence how many treatments you ultimately need, so I'll monitor your progress throughout your course.
-
You’ll generally need to avoid methods that remove the hair from the root, such as waxing, plucking or epilating, because the laser needs an appropriate target within the follicle.
Shaving is normally used between appointments instead. I’ll give you clear preparation and aftercare instructions as part of your treatment plan so you know exactly what you can and can't do.
-
Laser hair removal can provide long-lasting hair reduction, helping to reduce the need for regular hair removal.
Some hair may return over time, and occasional top-up treatments may be beneficial to help maintain your results.
-
I prefer to describe the results as long-lasting hair reduction rather than permanent hair removal.
Laser can significantly reduce unwanted hair, but results vary and factors including hormonal changes can influence future hair growth. My aim is always to give you realistic expectations rather than make promises that can't be guaranteed.
-
Hair grows in different stages, and laser is most effective when the hair is in the appropriate active growth phase.
Not every hair will be at that stage during a single appointment, which is why treatments are spaced over a course rather than carried out as a one-off treatment.
-
Possibly. Once you've completed your initial course, occasional maintenance or top-up treatments may be beneficial if you notice some hair returning over time.
Everyone is different, so I’ll advise you based on your individual results rather than automatically recommending treatments you don't need.
Suitability & Safety
-
Laser hair removal can be suitable for many people, but it isn’t right for everyone. Your skin type, hair colour and characteristics, medical history, medications and other individual factors can all affect whether treatment is suitable for you.
That’s why every new client at The Beam Room Berkshire has a consultation and patch test before starting treatment. I’ll assess your individual circumstances, talk through anything relevant and make sure it’s appropriate for you to proceed.
-
Laser hair removal is not carried out during pregnancy at The Beam Room Berkshire.
If you’re breastfeeding, please let me know when booking your consultation so we can discuss your individual circumstances and whether treatment should be postponed.
If you become pregnant during a course of treatments, please let me know and we can pause your appointments until it is appropriate for you to continue.
-
Yes, some medications can affect your suitability for laser treatment or make your skin more sensitive to light.
It’s important that you tell me about all medications and supplements you’re taking during your consultation, including anything prescribed or purchased over the counter. You should also let me know if anything changes during your treatment course.
Please don't stop taking prescribed medication in order to have laser treatment. If necessary, treatment can be postponed or I may ask you to seek advice from your healthcare professional before proceeding.
-
Certain medical conditions may affect whether laser hair removal is suitable for you or whether additional precautions are needed.
Your medical history forms part of your consultation, so please let me know about any conditions you have, even if you’re unsure whether they're relevant. If I need further information before treating you, I’ll explain this during your consultation.
-
Recent tanning or significant sun exposure can affect the safety and suitability of laser treatment, so it’s important to tell me about any recent sun exposure or tanning before your appointment.
I’ll provide guidance on sun exposure before and after your treatments and assess your skin before proceeding. If it isn't appropriate to treat safely, your appointment may need to be postponed.
-
The treatment area needs to be free from fake tan for your laser appointment. Please follow the preparation guidance I provide and make sure any self-tanning products have been completely removed from the area before treatment.
If you're unsure whether enough time has passed or whether your skin is ready for treatment, please contact me before your appointment.
-
Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment within the hair, which means hair colour is an important factor in how well it is likely to respond.
Very light blonde, white and grey hairs contain little or no pigment for the laser to target, so they may not be suitable for laser hair removal. Red hair can also respond differently depending on its pigment.
I’ll assess your hair during your consultation and give you an honest opinion about whether I believe laser treatment is likely to be worthwhile for you.
-
Laser hair removal may help reduce unwanted hair associated with hormonal changes or conditions, but hormones can also influence new hair growth over time.
This can mean results and maintenance requirements differ from person to person. I’ll always give you realistic expectations and, where appropriate, explain that ongoing top-up treatments may be needed to help manage future growth.
-
Please tell me.
Changes to your health, medication, skin, sun exposure or other circumstances may affect whether it’s appropriate to carry out your next treatment. I'll check relevant information with you throughout your course, but it's important to let me know about any changes, even if they don't seem significant.
If there’s ever a reason why I don't believe it's appropriate to treat you that day, your safety will always come before carrying out the treatment.
Your Treatment Experience
-
A relaxed, private and welcoming experience where the focus is entirely on you.
I’ll take the time to explain everything clearly, answer your questions and make sure you feel comfortable and informed. There’s no busy salon environment and no pressure — just professional, personal care in a one-to-one setting.

Yes — you’ll always see me, Suzanne.
The Beam Room Berkshire is my own one-to-one studio, so I’ll be with you from your initial consultation throughout your treatment journey. It means I get to know you, understand your goals and provide continuity at every appointment.
-
I use a professional SMARTDiode laser system with SHR (Super Hair Removal) technology.
It delivers laser energy through a series of controlled pulses as the applicator moves across the treatment area, gradually building heat within the hair follicle. Treatment settings are selected according to individual factors including your skin, hair characteristics and treatment area.
-
Everyone experiences laser differently, and sensation can vary depending on the area being treated and the individual.
I’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand and check in with you throughout your appointment. Your patch test also gives you the opportunity to experience the sensation before your first full treatment.
-
I'll provide you with the appropriate preparation guidance before your treatment.
It’s important to follow this carefully, as things such as recent sun exposure and your usual method of hair removal can affect your treatment. If you’re ever unsure about what you should or shouldn't do before an appointment, please ask me.
-
Your skin may look or feel a little different immediately following treatment, and I'll explain what is normal and provide you with the appropriate aftercare advice.
Following your aftercare guidance is an important part of looking after the treated area between appointments.
-
I’m qualified to VTCT Level 4 in Laser & IPL, alongside VTCT Level 3 in Anatomy & Physiology.
I have also completed the Laser/IPL Safety Management Course (Core of Knowledge), together with manufacturer-specific SMARTDiode training with Smart Group in the professional and safe use of their laser technology.
Ongoing learning and professional standards are important to me, so you can feel confident that your treatment is being carried out with care, knowledge and attention to detail.
